Why do cars have exhausts?

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Why do cars have exhausts?  This seems like a really simple question with some fairly obvious answers doesn’t it?

However, when you take a moment to think about it, you realise that the major purposes of car exhausts are actually contradictory.

A car exhaust has several purposes:

a)         To remove the by products of combustion from the car’s engine
and vent them into the atmosphere away from passengers
b)         To silence the noise of the engine
c)         To clean up car engine emissions before venting them into the
            atmosphere (post 1992 cars only)

Point ‘a’ is simple. All you need is a length of pipe that is correctly shaped to direct away the by product gases.
However, fulfilling point ‘b’ makes it much harder to carry out Point ‘a’.
Point ‘c’ makes fulfilling point ‘a’ even harder.

These contradictory factors means there will always be a trade off when buying a new exhaust for your car.  One thing that does hold fast is the list of considerations that need to be taken into account before purchasing an aftermarket car exhaust:

•           price
•           durability
•           weight
•           ease of fitting
•           compatibility with your make and model of car
•           performance
•           sound
•           quality of construction

When you decide to buy an exhaust it’s worth doing some research on the internet. Perhaps starting with companies who offer an 0800 phone number to keep your call costs down.

In an economic down turn cost considerations can be a crucial deciding factor.  However, it’s a good idea to think long and hard.  The cost of a stainless steel exhaust may considerably outweigh that of a mild steel one but in reality will prove to be a better investment as it will last many times longer.

Cargraphic Add Host Of Mods To The Audi RS6

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

As many performance car enthusiasts may have already heard, Audi is set to end production of its RS6 at the end of September. In order to mark the occasion the team at Cargraphic have been working hard on some modifications which will give the vehicle a boost.

As if the performance of the 4F Series 426kw/ 580 PS engine wasn’t enough, it will now pack a 489 kW/ 665 PS punch. This equates to an additional of 15% of power, which will turn the Audi into a more impressive beast.

The engineers at cargraphic have also developed some three-part GT-R 21-inch rims and a brand new stainless steel exhaust system, which will add to the visual appeal of the motor. So much noise is generated by this exhaust that it breaks the German laws on noise pollution. The glorious 10.5×21” wheels are absolutely oozing with class and can come as part of a package with /3OR21 tyres.

The exhausts have been produced at Cargraphic’s factory in South West England. The team have put a great deal of effort into ensuring that the mufflers and catalytic converters are absolutely top quality. Potential customers will be happy to discover that the system is made from rust resistant stainless steel. Drivers will have the option of optimally refilling and emptying the car’s combustion chamber after taking it for a spin.

It is a win – win situation as these exhausts also enhance the attractiveness of the vehicle. The Audi customer has the choice over whether to modify the RACE design with 80 millimetre pipes and two oval exhausts. Those which have been given a lick of black enamel look really special.

In related news, the new Audi A6, complete with super V8 engine, is due to come on sale at some point during 2011. This vehicle will be doing battle with the Alpina B5 Bi-turbo BMW M5, set for release in the near future.

The A6 is being developed with safety in mind, as evidenced by the solid structure and impact protection. Aluminium will play a major part in the construction of this car, alongside steel and foam reinforcements. This would seem to be part of a general push for environmental friendliness as the vehicle will produce fewer harmful emissions than previous models. The driver’s wallet will also benefit as fuel consumption has been reduced.

Economical BMW X3 still packs quite a punch

Friday, August 6th, 2010

BMW have revealed a host of details about the new X3, which is due to come on sale towards the end of 2010. As far as initial appearances it is not much different from the previous model. However, the leading manufacturers have packed some extra length so that the vehicle now looks a bit like the old X5.

It is on the interior that the greatest amount of work has been done. BMW have clearly drawn some inspiration from the recently released 5-series. The X3 comes complete with an M leather steering wheel, which adds some luxury to the driving experience. The new model has also been kitted out with a big ‘joystick’ transmission lever.

The company have made the rather impressive claim that the X3 combines a comfortable travelling experience with transportation capabilities to meet each drivers individual needs. They also said that the shape of this car provides an air of elegance, durability and agility.

If you’re looking for a vehicle with a bit of oomph then you will be happy to hear that the new BMW has an impressive 181bhp 2-litre diesel engine. The manufacturers are not overly keen on exhausts which chuck out a lot of harmful fumes so they have created a motor which produces CO2 emissions of under 150g/km.

As an optional extra you can enhance your driving experience with the excellent Electronic Damping Control System. People who opt to add this feature will find that steering is easier than ever before and throttle response times are significantly reduced.

If you like the thought of looking down on the mere mortals in their inferior cars then you will enjoy the raised seating position. According to BMW this feature allows ‘convenient entry, while, optimising the overview of the traffic situation’.

The new X3 is also a reasonably good option for those of you who like to consider the practicalities. You will have little trouble packing shopping bags into a luggage compartment which has an impressive capacity of almost 600 litres. The rear seats can be folded down in case you require any additional space.

Adrenaline junkies will surely enjoy the benefits of the Performance Control feature. This fantastic new addition will allow 80% of the available torque to be transferred to the rear wheels when steady throttle is applied.

Although the full price list hasn’t yet been revealed, the new vehicle is expected to cost upwards of £30,000. Head along to the Paris Motor Show in October for your chance to see what all the fuss is about.
